Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.

AUTHOR’S NOTES:

We are entering a new age. You can see the signs all around us, if you look. How we do business, where and how we shop. Stores are closing at an alarming rate. Malls are being vacated and most commerce is done on line. Well, who didn’t expect this eventually? But the pandemic has accelerated the process exponentially. As with any period of radical change, it is making some very rich and others very poor. So many of the storied companies of America’s past are out of business or on their way. Lord and Taylor, Toys ‘R Us, Pier 1, Bonwit Teller, A&P, the list just goes on and on. They say the only constant is change. Well, here’s a grand example of that reality.

There are issues that take a very long time to address, and so we discuss them for years, sometimes, before we are ready to do the actual work. One of the ongoing astrological issues is America’s Pluto Return. Pluto takes a very long time to move. Its orbit around the Sun is about 240 years, and any Pluto aspect to you individually or collectively will take a number of years once it has begun. There are several ways to view the timing of this transit based on the style of astrology you study. But I believe it is about at least a 20 year aspect that began a number of years ago and will continue through 2024 when Pluto finally moves into Aquarius for good. But even after it has moved into Aquarius the projects and processes that began while it was transiting Capricorn will continue for a very long time. It isn’t an event. It’s a transformation that will change our world in ways we still can only imagine.

Pluto rules many things. It has domain over transformational changes, as I said above. We say it represents death and rebirth, which I believe is a clear definition of transformation. It also has much to do with the unconscious, the collective and all we hold jointly, the therapeutic arts, and it rules the commodity of oil and all fossil fuels. These are all interconnected issues. Fossil fuel is a dying commodity. It won’t suddenly disappear. Our world has become so completely dominated by it financially and physically that it will take a generation of push and pull to finally loosen our unhealthy connection. But it’s happening. Electric cars and a decaying environment have made it very clear that if we don’t detach from oil, coal and gas we will not survive. While there is certainly a possibility that humanity is more suicidal than we believe, it does us no good to think that way. We always have crises. There are wars and plagues, catastrophic accidents and other tests, and yet after each we have a baby boom.

Humanity is like an old woman who complains that she wishes she could die, but runs to the doctor when she gets a cold. She doesn’t want to die. She wants to be 25 again. The collective is much like that. We don’t want the world to end. We just wish it was easier, and as peaceful as the old pictures and memories tell us it was. But of course, back when the world was young and America was the wild and wooly west people died of simple infections. There was no understanding of hygiene or modern technology that we take for granted today. No, we don’t want to be back in the 1800s or earlier. We want all of the amenities of the 2020s but with clean air and water, large tracts of unspoiled land, and the hope and optimism that the future will be bright and sunny. We just don’t want to do the work and accept the sacrifices that would make that a reality. We want healthy and fish filled oceans, but hell I want to eat my tuna and drive my jet ski wherever I wish. Damn it! That’s my right as a free American! Hmm…I’m afraid you can’t have it both ways. And so, we are at the crossroads we always knew we would meet. As Neil Young sang so many years ago: “Look at mother nature on the run in the 1970s…” The choice is ours to make. Will we do the right thing?

NEW MOON:

The New Moon falls on Sunday April 11th at 10:31 P.M. EDT at 22 degrees Aries 25 minutes. So we begin the cycle anew. That’s what spring is all about, the revitalization of life, optimism, change and new beginnings. Aries is the start of all things. It has a well-earned reputation for jumping first and then seeing where its feet will land. This can cause problems and at times lead to issues that the precociousness of this sign can exacerbate. But it also allows for advancement and fresh ideas. Sometimes you have to take chances if you want innovation. This is the time of year when we are shaking off the remains of winter and its harsh reality. Usually it is a cleansing of the past 4 or 5 months. But this time we are all trying to sweep up the pandemic dust that has accumulated for more than a year. It may take several cleanings and a whole lot Swiffers to do the job. Try to have some patience. We aren’t out of the woods or really out of the pandemic winter quite yet and frustration has reached a boiling point for many. The weather is getting better and at least we can take a long walk without the half dozen layers of clothing that has become our norm. Get outside. See the trees as they struggle to bring their buds to the surface. And hear the sweet songs of the birds as they too reveal their angst at the long dreary season, and chirp their hope for a fresh beginning.

We are going into a period when many things will come to the surface, not just the flowers and plants. Our society has been locked in a harsh battle for direction and purpose for a long time; much longer than Covid-19. But it all seems to have culminated as we sat locked inside this past 15 months staring out onto a surreal stage where “Waiting for Godot” seemed to morph into a “Twilight Zone” episode. The economy is tiptoeing into a new year and seems unstable and unsure of its footing. Are we heading into an inflationary period, a post-pandemic “roaring twenties” or a potential correction that could set many agendas on their ass? Personally I feel that we are on fairly solid ground and that there will be continued growth in many sectors. The vaccines seem to be doing their job for the most part, and there is some good news on the employment front and on the potential for reopening many cities. But we need to move our society forward quickly or we will find ourselves once again shackled to a political gridlock and we could miss a great opportunity to catch up to some ideas and projects that much of the rest of the world has already embraced.

There is Biden’s desire for big projects and changes that will require a great deal of money and support that may or may not be there when push comes to shove. And while no single aspect, certainly not a lunar one, will be sufficient to shake the world to its core, this is a moment when the ideals and the differences the two parties in this country hold will become more obvious and, most likely, more confrontational. I hope that we can all see the need for big changes and not get caught up in the pettiness of our tribalism and mutual anger. Well, Aries is one of the most optimistic of signs, and I guess I share that sense of hope. So Happy New Moon and welcome to the start of our yearly journey. May your path be well lit and smooth, and your hopes and dreams move your forward in a realistic and optimistic way.

VENUS SQUARES PLUTO:

On Sunday April 11th at 11:20 P.M. EDT we will be faced with the harsh reality of what our relationships are really about. If there have been some hidden agendas or just a desire to avoid dealing with what’s happening beneath the surface you may not be able to ignore the truth now. While this is a quick moving aspect and won’t have a long term effect on its own, because it comes on the heels of the New Moon we will feel its energy for the next few weeks. This is a chance to clean out some problems in our most intimate connections. It won’t be easy to avoid direct confrontation or underlying problems. This won’t create any, but it will bring existing ones to the surface.

THE SUN SEXTILES MARS:

On Tuesday April 13th at 7:09 P.M. EDT this very active transit will give us all a day or so of heightened energy and assertiveness. You can get a lot done if you focus your attention on your goals and don’t get distracted by senseless chest thumping or egos. When the Sun and Mars are in aspect, even if it’s a positive sextile or trine, there is a tendency to be aggressive and feel the need to prove something to yourself or others. While the positive transits make it easier to direct the force it’s still a matter of perspective and objectives. If you pay attention to what’s really important and aim your efforts in that direction, you will be able to push your projects forward and get closer to your goals. Because this is an assertive transit you should stay busy and physically active. That will help avoid any confrontations or useless disputes. If you use this properly it will be a very productive and affirmative day, and you should feel confident in your actions.

VENUS ENTERS TAURUS:

On Wednesday April 14th at 2:22 P.M. EDT until May 8th at 10:01 P.M. EDT Venus enters one of the signs it rules. This is a time when we will all be looking for ways to shore up our financial matters and put our values in order. For the next few weeks we will be interested in defining our true purpose and aim. This will affect us personally and it’s important that you keep an open mind and not assume that you already know what’s most valued. You may be surprised by what you discover. And it could redirect your efforts in ways you hadn’t expected. This will also be true in the collective. We are at a point in our society when many issues are being debated and the differences of opinion are stark and in some ways crippling. Can we open our conversation to a freer expression of what is needed? Or will we continue to stand on opposite sides of the issues solely for the sake of tribalism? There are many things that both sides happen to agree about, but they are held back from compromise because of the scope of our indoctrination and the fear of alienating those we seek support and comfort from. It’s time to take off the blinders and recognize the need for change and for impartiality. I don’t know if we can achieve that at the moment, the way things are. But this transit will certainly point out what is important to us all. This will be more obvious regarding our financial security. But it’s true about many issues. Expect some changes in perception over the coming weeks. As Leo Tolstoy once said: “Everyone talks about changing the world. No one talks about changing themselves.” And while you can’t change the world, you can adjust your personal point of view to be more inclusive and to at least hear what others have to say.

THE SUN SEXTILES JUPITER:

On Thursday April 15th at 12:59 P.M. EDT this wonderfully positive and optimistic transit will give us a day or so of enthusiasm and energy. This is a great day for any social activity, travel, creativity or just for an enjoyable respite. This usually is Tax Day and hardly a time of celebration, but this year they have extended the time we have to file, so if you haven’t gotten around to it, relax. You still have time to procrastinate, (lol) and can spend the day lollygagging enjoying spring. Get out and see the world. If you can get into a car or other means of transportation, take a few hours and visit the beach or the mountains. Sometimes a short trip can be very rejuvenating.

THE SUN SQUARES PLUTO:

On Friday April 16th at 9:27 A.M. the mood will shift and we will all be focusing on some rather serious matters. This square wants us to dig up what is underneath and see it in the light of day. While that isn’t always pleasant or easy, the purpose is to expunge that which is festering beneath the surface. If you use it well you can clean out some buried problems that could become much more difficult and may require your attention when you are least capable of dealing with it. If there are issues in your relationships that should be aired out, this is a time when they may demand your attention. If there is something that has required your consideration for some time, you may not be able to avoid looking at it. But that’s okay. By renovating your life periodically you can keep things clean and in order.

MARS TRINES JUPITER:

On Saturday April 17th at 1:14 A.M. EDT this very positive and enthusiastic transit will bring in an air of optimism and high energy. Mars represents the ego and Jupiter the desire for expansion and new ideas. When they work well together there is an opportunity to use our egos in a more enlightened and productive manner. You should be able to express your needs and desires in a forceful but non-combative way and tell others what you want from a situation with a gentle hand and sense of humor. This trine takes place in the wee small hours of the morning; so much of its influence will be felt on Friday night, as transits are more powerful as they apply. But its effects will linger into Saturday primarily because Mercury will sextile both Jupiter and Mars later today and will continue the positive feelings.

MERCURY SEXTILES JUPITER & MARS:

On Saturday April 17th at 12:00 P.M. & 3:09 P.M. EDT these two very positive and useful aspects complete. Today most of us will be interested in communicating in an open and honest fashion and expressing what’s on our minds. There will be a lot of energy behind your speech, so keep that in mind and try not to be overly aggressive. But for the most part you should be able to tell others what you’re thinking and listen to their ideas and problems clearly and without conflict. The sextiles (and trines) allow us to be more proactive and to use the combined energy of the planets and what they represent to achieve a better end. But only if you use them. They do not force themselves upon us like the hard aspects (conjunct, opposition & square) do. So you must be willing to move your thoughts today and to use them in a structured and focused manner. If you do, you can accomplish much and you will find that others are willing to work with you towards a common goal. These aspects are followed by Mercury in square to Pluto later today, so we can expect the atmosphere to change soon after the completion of these two sextiles. So if you use these two transits correctly and then apply the openness the imply as you approach the Mercury square Pluto you should then be able to dig up some buried issues and take care of them once and for all with a clear and open mind.

MERCURY SQUARES PLUTO:

On Saturday April 17th at 5:49 P.M. EDT the energy will change as this square comes into orb. While this square will demand your attention and may be a little rough around the edges, if you have used the two sextiles mentioned above properly you should find that you can dig into the matter and bring some things to light. Squares aren’t inherently negative or troubling. They just demand our attention and if we aren’t facing what they represent, that is when problems arise. This is a chance to look at some issues that have been ongoing for some time and haven’t been dealt with honestly. By keeping an open mind and being willing to see what’s been happening in the undercurrent you can make changes and admit where there is a problem. Pluto is concerned with anything that is decaying. If you deal with the issue in time it will be resolved. (This is what America is facing as we go through our Pluto Return and are faced with a crumbling infrastructure.)

MERCURY ENTERS TAURUS:

On Monday April 19th at 6:29 A.M. EDT until May 3rd at 10:49 P.M. EDT the planet of thoughts will enter the fixed earth sign. For the next few weeks there will be a cautious and rather conservative attitude underlying our communications. This is a period to take time making up your mind. If your natal Mercury placement tends to be overly aggressive and lack a certain amount of patience you may become rather frustrated while this aspect is going on. It would be wise to pull back and wait until the other person makes up their mind. Otherwise you will be seen as pushy and demanding and could upset what might be a very positive interaction by going against the stream.

THE SUN ENTERS TAURUS:

On Monday April 19th at 4:33 P.M. EDT we enter the fixed part of spring. This is when this season shines. I find it to be in some ways the most delightful of periods when flowers bloom and the promise of summer teases us with warmer temperatures and a day in the high 70s followed by one in the low 50s. That is the tease of spring and the frustration as we try to decide how to dress for the day. There will be a more measured, slower approach to things. This is how Taurus likes to work. It isn’t ever in a hurry and can take a very long time making up its mind. Well, that’s the purpose of the 12 signs, to teach us all the varied lessons of life each year. Now it’s time to move in a persevering and easy-going fashion and allow the situation to work itself out. If you push a bull too hard you’ll get a horn up your… well, you get the picture.

VENUS CONJUNCTS URANUS:

On Thursday April 22nd at 9:01 P.M. EDT there will be an energetic and somewhat erratic underlying tone to relationships. This is a day to seek out the unusual and to step outside of your comfort zone. This doesn’t mean that you have to date someone from the planet Ork, but you may be drawn to someone who doesn’t fit into your usual type. This also doesn’t only apply to dating. You may get a great deal of enjoyment out of anything that’s a bit out of the ordinary. If you usually like pop music, maybe an evening of classical or jazz could stir up your innards. You like portraits and pictures of youngsters on ponies; maybe a trip to Moma and a visit with Picasso or Chagall might awaken your sensitivities. The point is that there are many ways to look at the world, or to hear its song.  This is a time to take off the blinders and see just what else is out there. You usually like Italian or Mexican food, how about something exotic like Ethiopian or traditional Russian cuisine? Actually I find the take out menu from Ork quite interesting. You may like pan-fried Zoogle with a spicy Flaferatal sauce. Just stay away from the Xadonia sauce unless you have a strong stomach. Live a little. Try something new and adventurous.

MARS ENTERS CANCER:

On Friday April 23rd at 7:49 A.M. EDT until June 11th at 9:34 A.M. EDT the god of war travels through this emotional sign. Those born with this placement know full well the difficulty of being both strong and compassionate while working hard to retain a sense of dignity. For the next 6 weeks the world will be at odds with itself even more than usual. If this placement is handled well, it can create an atmosphere of gentle persuasion and empathy. But if the ego finds it difficult to express compassion and personal emotions are overwhelming, this may be a very frustrating time when it is difficult to find compromise and many things will not come to fruition. Try your best to be honest about your feelings and let others know what is going on. That way they can respond in a clear and knowing manner. Otherwise you may find that they are acting out in ways that are counter-productive. This will be a very important time for our political aspirations. If we cannot reach a place of deeper understanding, and if the great divide continues without resolution, much of what we had hoped to accomplish will come to naught. Remember, all you have control over is your own attitude and decisions, so make them the most honest and productive you can. And let us hope that the collective will come to a path of compatibility and understanding that will allow us to move the needle a bit.

MERCURY CONJUNCTS URANUS:

On Saturday April 24th at 2:42 A.M. EDT our thoughts and tongues will be moving rapidly and without the usual filters. This aspect can represent genius or insipid stupidity. It all depends on how it’s used. Because ideas come at such an accelerated pace if you can keep up with them you may be able to find a unique solution to a problem or grasp a concept that has been hard for you to understand. But if you jump head first into a situation without organizing your mind and focusing on the immediate, you could make things much worse. The disciplines we learn in yoga, marital arts, and even piano lessons are all the same. Breathe into your work. Take apart and learn the various parts of something and then put it back together again. I’m a jazz and blues musician and, while I love to listen to classical music I was never a great student of that field. My mind moves in sudden and erratic ways much more suited to improvisation than repetition. But to learn the chops necessary to play jazz I had to work my fingers seemingly forever. When I was studying Chopin with my jazz teacher (yes, Chopin is very much related to jazz, I can discuss that at a later date), my mentor, Sanford Gold had me take apart each measure, learn one hand then the other, then play it together and move onto the next measure. In time I was able to play the entire piece. And what I learned there made my fingers so much more nimble that they could keep up with the obsessively active movement of my brain.

The point is, if we take what we have learned in areas of life and employ it in other things it can often help us understand how to approach a new or innovative idea. That is the concept behind a Mercury-Uranus aspect, especially the conjunct. So for a day or two leading up to this you can use it to delve into new ways of looking at the world. And it will be much more productive if you find a way of disciplining your thoughts.

VENUS & MERCURY SQUARE SATURN:

On Sunday April 25th at 12:22 A.M. EDT & 7:58 A.M. EDT we will have a morning of some restrictions and an underlying sense of responsibility. This is a pair of transits that will demand that we look at our obligations and deal with them first. Because these happen overnight we may not feel the tug as much as we would is the middle of the day. But don’t be fooled. The sense of duty that these squares imply will make themselves known and this is a few days when you simply must put things in order, complete anything that has been left hanging and aim your attention at the most demanding and necessary problems you have. If you don’t, you will miss an opportunity to clean up a mess or two. While these aren’t the most enjoyable or light-hearted of aspects they have an important message about where you should be aiming your energies. Deal with it well and you will be in better shape to face the Scorpio Full Moon coming tomorrow. If not, that aspect may weigh a bit heavily on you and you might find yourself struggling to complete something that is now facing a deadline.

FULL MOON IN SCORPIO:

On Monday April 26th at 11:32 P.M. EDT at 7 degrees Scorpio 06 minutes the lunar peak occurs. We are in an era of great change, and this sign has much to do with deep-rooted changes. We call Scorpio and its ruler, Pluto “transformative” energy, which implies altering the very foundation of things, not just the surface. When we deal with Pluto transits we often see the restructuring of the very basis of what we are viewing. For example, America is going through its Pluto Return for the next number of years. And one of the main topics of conversation is the impending Infrastructure Bill that Biden is trying to push. Our nation is crumbling; from our roads, bridges, tunnels, subways, water supplies, to our ability to complete in a 21st century world with other nations who are far ahead of us in reimagining their transportation and shared sustainability. If we don’t do something soon we will certainly become a failed empire, destined to join the Roman, British, Ottoman and others that went before us. A nation or empire usually crumbles from within, not from outside attacks. While the fall of Rome can be viewed from many different angles and the final blow came from the Germanic tribes, it was a century of decay and infighting that weakened the city and its empire enough to allow its final sacking. America is at a crossroads now where we can either move into an era of rebuilding, stabilizing and growing with new ideas and fortitude, or we can continue to flail at each other and tear down the very foundation that has led us to be the economic leader of the world. Which will we choose?

PLUTO RETROGRADES:

On Tuesday April 27th at 4:04 P.M. EDT until October 6th at 2:29 P.M. EDT Pluto begins its backward motion and many issues will be put to a test. This is the planet (god) that we say rules the underworld. I take these definitions more in a psychological manner than a material one. Yes, Pluto has much to do with all things that are decaying and hidden beneath the surface. It is often a prominent energy in matters of vengeance and unspoken agendas. I think of it as one of the main forces that rule the unconscious and allow us to delve into that which is concealed while it continues the process of decay. As this planet begins its backward motion many things will be buried even deeper and we may find it hard to bring them to the surface. The retrograde of any planet implies an internalization of that energy and may make it even more important to struggle with the truth it seeks. The great divide in America doesn’t seem to be getting easier to cross. For the next 5 ½ months we will be faced with bringing these issues into the light where they may be viewed and considered.

THE SUN CONJUNCTS URANUS:

On Friday April 30th at 3:54 P.M. EDT this will be a day when we can expect some disruptions and unexpected events. At its best, this can be a time when we can experience a new and exciting time. This isn’t a day to follow your usual path. Step your normal routine and keep an open mind. You may be surprised by someone or something you hadn’t expected. Uranus wants new input and will rebel against anything that is boring or mundane. This can be a potentially explosive and unbalanced transit and could create some difficult moments. Caution is called for and you should pay close attention to your environment.

MERCURY SQUARES JUPITER & THE SUN SQUARES SATURN:

On Monday May 3rd at 5:33 A.M. EDT & 6:02 A.M. EDT these two aspects complete respectively. The day starts off with this expansive and optimistic aspect. We will all have a lot to say and not much discipline in keeping our thoughts to ourselves. Expect people to blurt out what’s on their minds and at times to be brusque and unfiltered in their responses. But the energy will change as the restrictive Saturn transits takes over from the unrestrained Jupiter energy. We often have days when there are competing transits that are quite different. Because the Jupiter square Mercury is followed closely by the Sun square Saturn there will be an underlying reticence that will belie what we are saying. Today will be a day of quick ideas and slow action. You may say something without forethought and regret it soon after. The best way to deal with this combination is to remain mentally active and find positive and useful outlets for your ideas, thoughts and speech, but not to act without patience. That way you can release the mental tension and avoid stepping into a mess. With Mercury about to enter Gemini for an extended visit later tonight, it’s important that you take your time before making any public announcements or blurting out your opinion. We are about to have two months of excessive mental and verbal activity, so you will have plenty of time to make your case.

MERCURY ENTERS GEMINI:

On Monday May 3rd at 10:49 P.M. EDT until July 11th at 4:35 P.M. EDT Mercury will be in the sign of its rulership. Because it will retrograde on May 29th at 6:34 P.M. EDT it will spend a very long time in this sign. This implies that there will be a lot of communication and ideas will flow consistently for the next 2 months. A planet transiting the sign of its rulership is usually seen as a positive event. But I have found that there are plenty of times when we can overdo things during such a period. You need to find ways of directing the excessive mental energy that will abound and recognize that many people will be undisciplined and be apt to say whatever comes across the computer screen of their brains.

VENUS ENTERS GEMINI:

On Saturday May 8th at 10:01 P.M. EDT until June 2nd at 9:19 A.M. EDT love will take an intellectual turn. If you want to reach someone do it through their brain, not their; well you know. I have always believed that the two most important planets in a long-term relationship were Saturn and Mercury. Longevity and communication is how you build trust between two people. Not through Venus or Mars, not even through the Sun and the Moon. Of course the interaction between these personal planets will have much to do with how the relationship works on a day to day basis. And a good synastry between the male and female energies and the emotional planets will help heal many wounds, but it’s the similarities between us not the differences that bind us. Communicate your feelings and find things in common. There’s a lot of time between intimate encounters that must be filled with something more than a mutual sexual attraction. This month we will all have an opportunity to experience that with this transit bringing our intellect to the surface.

DARK OF THE MOON:

The next New Moon falls on Tuesday May 11th at 3:00 P.M. EDT at 21 degrees Taurus 18 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the lunar cycles more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, don’t try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just won’t work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you don’t, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this “dead” energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.

Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.

The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition. All times are Eastern Time)
