ISSUE # 136
LIVING BY STARLIGHT
AN ASTROLOGICAL NEWSLETTER
This month we will see a large number of important outer planet aspects. Jupiter opposes Saturn, Uranus enters Aries, Saturn goes direct, Neptune retrogrades, Jupiter enters Aries, and Jupiter conjuncts Uranus at zero degrees Aries, exactly on the World Point. Should be an interesting month.
Jupiter opposes Saturn on May 23rd, and it will bring a lot of pent up stress out into the open. JupiterÕs need for expansion will be seriously curtailed by Saturn. And SaturnÕs usual instincts for restraint and balance could become lopsided by JupiterÕs inability to stay within confines. In other words, this is a wound up spring waiting to be sprung. There are so many stressful transits dancing around the heavens this year that it is difficult to say which will create events and which will be more psychological in nature. And it doesnÕt matter. You should not separate transits, but try to see them as a single picture, like one of those computer drawings that as you pull it away from your eyes the Ōhidden pictureĶ is revealed.
As Jupiter and Uranus begin their journey into Aries and conjunct on June 8th we will begin to see some new innovative thinking and research that will lead to more technological advancements. There will be some very positive results of this configuration, and it may help us push past the roadblock we have reached in our cultural development. The suddenness of Uranus coupled with the expansive nature of Jupiter could lead to great leaps of understanding, especially if placed just right in the chart of a scientist, artist, politician or philosopher. They say: the times make the man, but I think what they mean is: the transits make the man. When these powerful groupings affect an individual who is, for whatever reason, in a place to make a statement or create events, that person becomes a tool of the collective and is altered, not only by the transit, but by the pull of the worldÕs unconscious. L.B.J. is a perfect example. He left office a much different person than he was when he began his presidency. Saturn opposed Uranus from 1965 -67, right in the heart of his term. The world changed, and so did he. We will see others emerge through the mess we are in. This conjunction will be that much more intense than usual because of its placement at zero cardinal. It is part of the great T-square that we are approaching, and because of the explosive nature of Uranus and the expansive nature of Jupiter, there is the strong possibility of a large explosion occurring from now through the summer.
We are currently still experiencing Saturn in square to Pluto, although it has pulled away by a few degrees. The Uranus – Jupiter conjunct will complete the T-square. The square of Saturn to Pluto is represented by, among other things, the attempt to put controls (Saturn) on the trading market (Pluto). The Saturn – Pluto square is a transit that speaks of power struggles, limitations and frustration. These are difficult transits that are shaking up (Uranus) our foundation (Saturn), while putting a great deal of stress (Pluto – Saturn square) on the structure. We have been dealing with this force for the past 18 months, and it will culminate this July when Saturn opposes Uranus for the last time and Saturn pulls away from the square to Pluto in August.
Because of the increasing pressure these aspects are reflecting, those of us who are under stress or feeling angry may be responding to the energy of the collective as much as our own situations. This is one of those rare times when you can see more readily how the individual and the collective are intertwined. Moments of great stress in the world seem to magnify and, at the same time, trivialize our own problems.
If you have watched in awe as the stock markets have come roaring back while unemployment is pathetically high, and the middle class is drowning in its easy-credit fantasy world, you should be equally awed by the collapse of these markets over the next several months. I must question whether there are fundamentals that support an 11,000 DOW. Europe has just agreed to a trillion dollars in debt to keep the game going. Freddie and Fannie are losing billions of dollars each quarter, and the taxpayers are funding their continued bad financial decisions. Gold is trading at an all time high – and going higher. God knows how high. People buy gold like this only when they are scared out of their minds. And the stock bubble ignores it all; until last week, when Saturn opposed Uranus for the fourth time and we hit a wall full speed. It is going down to at least 8,500, and could even test the bottoms once again on the double dip I have anticipated since before this whole thing started in Õ08.
Whenever there is a Saturn – Uranus aspect the market volatility explodes. It has happened on all four of the passes of this opposition: the first 2 to the down side, the third to the upside. And now we are seeing this aspect push the DOW into triple digit trading days once more: some up, some down. The volatility has blown out once again, as the DOW moves hundreds of points a day.
Europe, and the Euro, may be imploding in unmanageable debt. China, which IÕve always believed was a bubble just waiting to pop, will drown in its unsold exports if this recession does, in fact, make another serious dip. Remember, it wasnÕt the first crash of 1929 that did all the damage. The 2nd crash of 1931 was much worse and had a horrendous affect monetarily and psychologically.
However difficult those transit have been, they may be only the lead up to the grand finale of this era. Pluto will square Uranus in 2012. Uranus rules all things explosive. Pluto rules Plutonium. It also rules acts of vengeance, hidden agendas and the shadow side of humanity, as expressed by dictators of all sorts, and the Nazi Party in particular.
What a terrific Mercury retrograde we had last month. A volcano erupted in Iceland halting all air traffic in and out of Europe. The Staten Island Ferry crashed – again. Just before Mercury turned around a Libyan airliner crashed. The DOW dropped about 1,000 points on what is being called a Ōtrading glitchĶ. Then the DOW went up 700 points, all in about an hourÕs time. Then were triple digit trading days in both directions. Funny stuff. I did say volatility would blow out, and it certainly has. The Great Crash of 1987, which was a result of unrestricted computerized trading, essentially a glitch, happened when transiting Uranus was in exact inconjunct to Mercury in the New York Stock ExchangeÕs chart while transiting Mercury was retrograde. Had you bought the indexes the next day and held them you would be a very rich person today.
Perhaps the precipitous drop in the DOW last month was a glitch, but the period we are in right now is not a result of a glitch of any kind, but rather a decades-long pillage of the worldÕs wealth. What we need is a reinvention of money and what it means. Until we undo what was done between the 70Õs and 2008, we are doomed to continue to have bubbles and crashes. The end result of this cyclical debacle is to repeatedly crush the little investor in favor of the wealthy. I am not opposed to the accumulation of wealth if it is earned and there is some equality in distribution. I am deeply opposed to the continued evolvement of a class that feeds on the wealth created through the manipulation of the middle class.
The truth is, we are all in this mess together. Even if you donÕt own a single share of stock, your life is intricately involved in Wall Street and the markets. Your pension, your banks, your very salary could rise or fall on what happens in these international exchanges. It is time that we accept that truth and find some way to have more input into what is being done with the accrued collective wealth of humanity. People of conscience and far-sightedness must become more involved in the financial world or it will pull us all down into the quagmire of greed and stupidity. Regardless of your political opinion or your concepts of what free enterprise is, Obama is only doing what the collective is demanding; trying to put controls (Saturn) on the shared wealth of the society (Pluto). Depending upon what happens these coming months, he may be able to do at least something to reign in the wild boars, but if the November elections fall they way they could, with the Republicans pulling in a great many mid-term seats, we will be facing a period of stagnation and political infighting that could seriously harm our ability to deal with the problems we are facing. Without major changes in how we do business, there will be many more ecological catastrophes like the gulf spill, and as the worldÕs population recognizes what is happening in scope and rapidity, eventually we will see the coming environmental wars begin, as humanity makes a last gasp effort to save its own skin.
The New Moon falls on Thursday May 13th at 9:04 P.M. EST at 23 degree Taurus 09 minutes. This lunar cycle will have much to do with values and resources. Taurus rules the natural 2nd house of money, and we are beginning a month of testing and retesting of our personal relationship to our resources, as well as societyÕs attitude towards finances. Anything that is shaky will become obvious and must be addressed. How well the European bailout works will become obvious over the next month. With the Full Moon in grandiose Sagittarius we can expect to see some fireworks about mid-month. If you have been avoiding reality in regards to your financial matters, it will be difficult not to face the truth now.
VENUS SQUARES JUPITER:
On Monday May 17th at 6:57 A.M. EST this pleasant aspect completes. There is a tendency towards overindulgences, but since this aspect hits so early in the morning most of us can avoid that pitfall. Caution and restraint are called for, especially the night before as this aspect is applying. If this hits your chart just right this can be a lucky aspect in financial matters or concerns of the heart.
VENUS SQUARES SATURN:
On Tuesday May 18th at 4:18 A.M. EST the exact opposite energy from yesterdayÕs transit comes along. This square is restrictive in money and romance, and often brings on a sullen or dour attitude. Since aspects are most powerful as they are applying, Monday night wonÕt be a particularly good time for a party. Most of us will just feel like sitting home and relaxing.
VENUS TRINES NEPTUNE:
Also on Tuesday May 18th at 6:14 P.M. EST this trine will complete. There is a lot of Venus energy all month, and many issues regarding relationships will be brought up. This transit is particularly good for artists and all creative ventures. There is a positive connection between the physical and the spiritual that should be easy to circumvent. Let your imagination run wild, and sift through your thoughts. You may have some very creative ideas.
THE SUN TRINES SATURN:
Also on Tuesday May 18th at 8:28 P.M. EST this productive transit occurs. This is a very useful energy that will allow you to focus your attention where it is most needed. Although this isnÕt a very exciting aspect, it will help lay a foundation down upon which we can expand our ventures and projects. Because this coincides with the Venus trine Neptune, this is a day of creative and functional energy. There could be some very wonderful pieces of art produced or advanced today.
THE SUN SQUARES NEPTUNE:
On Wednesday May 19th at 2:16 P.M. EST this debilitating transit completes. This can be a very uncomfortable and difficult energy. It produced feelings of self-doubt and distraction, and can be quite disruptive. Use caution and double check all your facts. Misrepresentations and misunderstandings are common. If you donÕt understand something, ask for clarity. Because Venus is in square to Uranus today as well, you can expect some unexpected and confusing events. This could be a very bad day for the stock markets, with sudden drops and much disarray.
VENUS SQUARES URANUS:
Also on Wednesday May 19th at 3:42 P.M. EST this transit comes along. This can be an exciting time, but it is also fraught with potential difficulties. Be careful of your money and your feelings. Sudden infatuations are possible, but there would probably be little stability in the affair. Wait until this passes before committing yourself. Money can come and go without a whisper, so pay attention.
VENUS ENTERS CANCER:
Also on Wednesday May 19th at 9:05 P.M. EST Venus enters this most expressive of signs. People will be more emotional and there will be a deeper connection in relationships that begin now. Remember, Cancer has a tendency to cling and a difficult time letting go of the past, so attachments made now will not be frivolous. If you are looking for a quickie you may want to wait until June 14th when Venus enters Leo.
THE SUN SEXTILE URANUS:
On Thursday May 20th at 5:46 P.M. EST we will all be looking for a little excitement. If this sets off your chart you may very well get it. This is a positive transit, and it will allow sudden and revolutionary changes without the usual disruptions. But like all trines and sextiles it must be used proactively or it will pass as just a pleasant few hours, perhaps with some interesting thoughts or unusual occurrences. Pass the quail eggs, please.
THE SUN ENTERS GEMINI:
Also On Thursday May 20th at 11:34 P.M. EST we enter the mutable air sign as we make the transformation from spring into summer. We have had a rather summer-like spring already, so we may not notice the change as much this year. For the next month communication will be the main purpose. We have a lot to say, and this is a good time to spew it out. When we travel through the mutable signs it is advisable to be a un-tethered as possible. Allow the changeability of this sign to show you new and interesting ways of looking at the world. DonÕt hold onto the status quo with such furor that you miss the new horizons.
JUPITER OPPOSES SATURN:
On Sunday May 23rd at 1:38 A.M. EST this difficult and at times trying aspect completes. This is testing our structure to see just how much more growth it will support. Any areas that are shaky will be shown, and because of JupiterÕs need to expand, and SaturnÕs tendency to prevent growth, there will be a moment of great stress in the world. We could see an escalation of the troubles in Greece, and perhaps an expansion into other nations. The markets are certainly going further down. How they trade on Monday will be a strong indicator of what you can expect as we approach the coming Sagittarius Full Moon on Thursday. If this is a temporary bottom, then they may explode to the upside at mid-week. But if this is another bear trigger, that Full Moon will drop these markets like the ton of crap they are.
VENUS OPPOSES PLUTO:
Also on Sunday May 23rd at 11:14 P.M. EST relationships will become more intense, especially if this sets off your chart. Pluto has a strong desire to ferret out secrets and dig deeply into any subject it encounters. Venus rules relationships and financial matters. This could be an interesting few days in the stock markets as we approach that Full Moon in Sagittarius.
This monthÕs lunar peak occurs on Thursday May 27th at 7:07 P.M. EST at 6 degrees Sagittarius 33 minutes. Sagittarius tends to blow everything out of proportion. This Full Moon coming so close to the Jupiter – Saturn opposition could be a doozy. With Uranus about to enter Aries for the first time in 84 years we are certainly at an interesting point in our history. Saturn is about to go direct as well, and a great deal of reality is about to be dumped on our heads. The volatility in the stock markets will continue, and this could be one hell of a day.
URANUS ENTERS ARIES:
Also on Thursday May 27th at 9:48 P.M. EST we begin a new chapter in the 84 year cycle of Uranus through the zodiac. Uranus rules all technological advances. The last time this planet entered Aries was in 1926. That was the year movies began to talk, and Farnsworth patented his new invention he called Television. Now we are seeing a new wave of technological devices, including 3D TV (which, I believe will be a gigantic failure). But the underlying theme here is that this is a time for new inventions, innovations and freedom in thought. We have seen some tremendous innovations over the past few decades, and it may seem as though we are at the end of an era of technological advancement. In fact, we are at the beginning of the greatest technological revolution since the invention of the internal combustion engine in the 19th century. If we knew then what we know now about the pollution, health issues, and other side-effects would the world have embraced the industrial revolution so freely? Of course. ItÕs all about profits and power. What we do with this new technology will decide where humankind will be in 50 years. What did we do with Talkies and TV?
SATURN GOES DIRECT:
On Sunday May 30th at 2:11 P.M. EST Saturn will begin to move forward as it prepares to finally leave Virgo and enter Libra. Projects that have been delayed or lack the proper foundation upon which to build will begin to move forward and stabilize. The approaching Saturn – Uranus opposition in July at zero degrees cardinal will be the culmination of the past 2 years. That doesnÕt mean everything will be hunky-dory once that last opposition passes. We still have other powerful transits to confront.
On Monday May 31st at 2:50 P.M. EST this most spiritual of planets will begin to run backwards. This will internalize a great deal of our fantasies and creativity. It will be a good time to create anything artistic, but it may be difficult to get it out to the public. I believe that many of the worldÕs great works of art have been created while Neptune was in retrograde. There is a deeper, more personal attachment to the arts during these times. Neptune also rules charities and selfless aid one might give in any number of ways. This is a good time to search your inner being and see if there isnÕt more you can do to help others.
MARS OPPOSES NEPTUNE:
On Friday June 4th at 1:54 P.M. EST a great deal of self-doubt and confusion will be in the air. Neptune will dissipate MarsÕ usual ego strength and weaken its resolve. This is not a good day for confrontations or putting yourself in a position where you must be on the defensive, particularly if this sets off your chart. I donÕt think this will be a good day for the stocks. Of course, Mars is also pushing against the Neptune, which indicates that this could be a good day for any creative venture. One needs to project Mars energy no matter what transit it is under, and in an opposition to Neptune it can be positively manifest in artistic or spiritual endeavors.
JUPITER ENTERS ARIES:
On Sunday June 6th at 2:29 A.M. EST this planet of growth and optimism crosses the World point and begins its journey through the zodiac anew. Innovational thought and action is the main thrust of this transit. Jupiter wants expansion and growth wherever it is going. Aries has little patience and tends to be rather impulsive. This is a good placement for Jupiter. It has dignity by triplicity, and feels right at home in Aries. Whatever is about to happen in the world, the addition of this largest of planets to the mixture guarantees a large and exciting time. Jupiter will conjunct Uranus, for the first time in this sign, in a few days, and almost anything is possible. The stocks could rally a thousand points! Or not. There could be a huge (Jupiter) explosion (Uranus)! Or not. The point is,
MARS ENTERS VIRGO:
On Monday June 7th at 2:11 A.M. EST our critical eye will become more dominant, which can be a positive or a negative thing. There could be a lot of nit-picking and ego directed arguments, try not to take the bait in meaningless bickering. Use this energy for tasks that require attention to detail for long periods of time. ItÕs a good energy for taking inventory, or rewriting a novel. Be careful not to become too crucial of your love interest. After all, weÕre all only human, which qualifies most of us for the AmericanÕs with disabilities act anyway, at least in relationships.
JUPITER CONJUNCTS URANUS:
On Tuesday June 8th at 7:25 A.M. EST this exciting and potentially explosive transit completes. Just about anything can happen while this aspect is in orb. Jupiter will exacerbate any planetary influence it conjuncts. Uranus is the most unpredictable (a word astrologers do not like) of energies. Thus, any situation that comes out of the Uranian force will be enlarged by JupiterÕs presence. It could be a thousand point move in the DOW, or a rather large explosion somewhere in the world. Or both. But remember, Jupiter just opposed Saturn a few days ago, so what is really happening is that this largest of planets if setting off the fourth and fifth passes of that Saturn – Uranus opposition. But even if we do not see an obvious manifestation of this conjunction right now, its affects will be felt for the next several months. Jupiter will retrograde in July at 3 degrees Aries and return to conjunct Uranus twice more. Those two conjuncts will take place in Pisces.
MERCURY SQUARES NEPTUNE:
On Wednesday June 9th at 6:40 A.M. EST this confusing aspect completes. This can be a very difficult energy fraught with misdirection and misunderstandings. Take a little extra time to clarify anything that seems foggy. ItÕs better to ask questions than to run off in the dark. Double check plans and make sure your GPS is working before you take off on your trip.
MERCURY ENTERS GEMINI:
On Thursday June 10th at 1:41 A.M. EST the winged god enters one of the signs it rules. For the next few weeks people will be very chatty and conversations will be rapid and direct. People will tend to be more intellectual than emotional, so try not to let your emotions outweigh your mind. You will accomplish much more with a clever idea or succinct argument than through your feelings. Things may move rather quickly, so pay attention. This transit is good for any communications or short journeys. Tackle your paperwork and put your life in order.
MERCURY SEXTILES URANUS AND JUPITER:
Also on Thursday June 10th at 6:29 A.M. & 9:42 A.M. EST respectively, this pair of sextiles occurs. These are very positive and useful transits, but like all sextiles they must be prodded and used proactively or they will just pass as a pleasant energy. Thoughts and communications will be lively and exciting. This is a good day for making plans for the future. Most of us will be seeing things from a far-sighted perspective and you should be able to recognize which of your schemes will work out in the long run. DonÕt sit in front of the computer all day. Get out and see the world. A short trip could be very invigorating and may open your consciousness to some new ideas.
MERCURY SQUARES MARS:
On Friday June 11th at 9:29 A.M. EST this potentially angry aspect comes along just in time for the dark of the moon. This is an argument waiting to happen. If it sets off your chart you could get caught up in a dispute that may not be of your making. Find creative outlets for any excessive mental energy you may be holding in. Mercury rules all forms of transportation, including walking. Mars rules the ego. Be careful not to let your ego interfere with you decisions, especially while traveling. Accidents are quite possible, but they would more likely be the result of unreleased tension. Let your feelings out and you will not be surprised by them.
DARK OF THE MOON:
The next New Moon falls on Saturday June 12th at 7:15 A.M. EST at 21 degrees Gemini 24 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the cycles of the moon more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, donÕt try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just wonÕt work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you donÕt, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this ŌdeadĶ energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.
Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.
Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.
The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.
All times are Eastern Daylight:
