MONTHLY SINCE 1999
LIVING BY STARLIGHT
AN ASTROLOGICAL NEWSLETTER
We are in the middle of three eclipses. The First was a Lunar Eclipse on July 7th, the 2nd is this New Moon Solar Eclipse on July 21st, and the 3rd is the next Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on August 5th. This is a very rare grouping of these befuddling transits. An eclipse does just what the name implies, it blocks out (or eclipses) the light and can create confusion and misdirection. There is no light and no road maps along the way.
A Lunar Eclipse will have much effect on our emotional lives. It may be difficult to express your feelings, and when you finally do, you may be reacting from the unconscious. We seem to just meander along until the next New Moon, although the underlying affects will actually last until the next eclipse.
Solar eclipse will have more to do with mundane things, such as our projects and worldly desires. Either can produce world events, and eclipses are quite prominent in mundane astrology. With three of them coming so close together we are in a very difficult and confusing moment. Most people tell me that they have little energy and a feeling of misdirection or uncertainty. Things donÕt seem to get accomplished in the time you expect, so leave more time and cultivate some patience. There is a very good possibility that we will see some major world event during this coming month.
Since I, and most of the financial astrologers I know, believe we are heading towards another stock market crash, we are watching and analyzing these eclipses and how they fall on various charts. The markets did not crap out in July, as I had expected, but rather moved sideways on this Saturn pass across NYSE Mars. So, perhaps the next crash will be in September when Saturn opposes Uranus once again. I would still sell any rally and wait to make long-term investments. My feelings about the stock markets have not changed. This is a long term bear market, and these rallies are fueled and manipulated by big money. Until the middle class reenters the game it will have no legs.
The time to be most concerned is next July. I have mentioned this date before in this newsletter, and I will once again point out the aspects. Saturn will opposes Uranus for the last of 5 times, at zero degrees Aries – Libra, on the Òworld pointÓ. Jupiter is in square to Pluto, a few degrees past its conjunct to Uranus. That Pluto – Jupiter square is almost exactly on AmericaÕs Venus, which rules the 6th, 10th and 11th houses, using the Koch house system. This speaks directly to the collective long-term wealth of our country, as well as its health, and status in the world. There will be some event around that time that will change the direction of our nation and the world.
The internet has become the invention that ate humanity. As one who has spent a lifetime working as an artist I am deeply disturbed by the direction our society is taking. First the music business self-destructed. There is no record industry to speak of any more. Music is the only business that gives its product away virtually for free. The business was hijacked by people who know nothing about the arts, and care less. I want to know why the %*&# Steve Jobs is the most important person in the music business.
Now the Internet is going after the publishing business. I want to know who the %&*# Amazon dot com is to decide how much a book should cost, instead of the publishers who have successfully controlled the print world for several hundred years. Now that Amazon has decided the cost of a book on Kindle should be $9.99, thatÕs it. The sale of hardcover books is rapidly decreasing and we are seeing another art business being flushed down the toilet. The shares of Amazon go up while the shares of publishing houses get crushed. Artists get paid less, the quality of the work decreases and our country gets stupider and stupider. The people who will gain the most from the toil of the artist in the long run are the few corporate executives who control the majority of the internet stocks.
Everyone in America now believes they have the right to be rich, famous and an artist, whether or not they have talent. The dumbing down of our species continues unabated. Reality TV, a book world that must cater to the 8-12 year olds, movie studios run by juveniles of all ages with the sensitivity of frat boys, have all lead to a feeling of futility.
And we have a generation of real artists struggling to make their mark in a world that doesnÕt even seem to know the difference, faced with the truth that it probably isnÕt even worth their time anymore. Concerts make hundreds of millions of dollars – mostly by musicians in their 50s and 60s. Everyone is cramming to see the Stones or the Eagles or Bruce before itÕs all gone. When the old rockers die out there will never again be a renaissance like we had in the 60Õs, 70Õs and even 80Õs. Kids with talent looking to make a decent living will either explore music as a hobby, or ignore it altogether. Why would anyone spend 20 years perfecting their craft when they will have to work in a restaurant until middle age or longer just to pay their rent?
Why would an author spend 5 years perfecting a book that wonÕt bring him enough money to quit his day job as an Internet editor? Oh, I forget, this is progress. Lord save us from ourselves.
The late, great singer-songwriter Phil Ochs once defined a liberal as someone who is ten degrees to the left of center during good times, and ten degrees to the right of center when it personally affects him.
We have a Democratic president, house, senate and menÕs room attendants, and the gun lobby is still pushing through more and more measures to allow guns everywhere. The latest is a federal law that would allow you to get a license to carry a concealed weapon in one state and then be allowed to carry that weapon in states that donÕt allow it. The federal law would supersede all state laws. Just how stupid are Americans? DonÕt ask. This is not the country you want to be in if this whole thing falls apart. Every putz will have a room full of semi-automatic weapons. So where are the liberals? Ten degrees to the right of center, as they fear for their jobs in a gun-crazy society. Uh, did I fall asleep and awaken in a new Republican administration? No, Phil Ochs was right. We are a nation of hypocrites, concerned about the great American experiment, except when it interferes with our own comfort. The insanely paranoid Patriot Act was passed with the speed of a roadrunner by both parties, and it remains the law of the land. Need I say more?
We are in a period similar to 1967 – 82 following the last Saturn – Uranus opposition when we had a 16 year bear market in the stocks. With unemployment rising, the housing situation deteriorating and an angry middle class I do not see any great bull markets for at least a decade. The only reason this country didnÕt completely collapse is because of the incredible amount of wealth that exists. But as that accumulated wealth dissipates and more people are left with nothing the foundation of our society will begin to crumble. Rather than use this period to learn, change and redistribute the goodies, we have shored up the system that led us here and ignored the great lessons being offered. We have just witnessed the greatest rip off in the history of humanity. The very same crooks who put this country in the toilet have been paid billions and billions of your dollars to bail them out so they can start to steal again. We are at the beginning of an era of economic Nazism when a handful of banks lead by Goldman Sachs will control the bulk of the wealth. It seems that little can stir up the American public. Nothing short of a violent revolution will change how we do business. And while Americans are often revolting, they rarely are rebellious.
The New Moon falls on Tuesday July 21st at 10:35 P.M. EST at 29 degree Cancer 27 minutes, and it is a Solar Eclipse, and a void of course Moon. This is the 2nd Cancer New Moon in a month, a true blue moon. We are in the midst of three eclipses in a row. On July 7th we had a lunar eclipse Full Moon. Now we have a Solar eclipse New Moon, and on August 5th we will have another Solar Eclipse Full Moon at 13 degrees Aquarius 43 minutes. So what does all this mean?
Eclipses, as the name implies, eclipse, or block out the light. A Lunar Eclipse will present us with a New Moon cycle that will muddle the water and make us all feel a bit spacey and out of touch. For the duration of that lunar cycle, things will be difficult to understand, misdirected and confusing. Because it is the Moon that is being blocked, emotional issues will be most affected. People will feel things and respond in ways either alien to their nature, or more forceful than usual. A Full Moon Solar Eclipse will do the same, however, with the Sun being blocked it will have more to do with our will and egos, than with emotions. The end result may seem quite similar, as there will be confusion and many decisions made on less than perfect information.
Many astrologers believe that the effects of an eclipse will only end with the next Eclipse. So with so many eclipses back to back when does the cycle actually complete? Probably not until December 31st when we have a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse at 10 degrees Cancer 15 minutes in opposition to the Full Moon Eclipse of July 7th at 15 degrees Capricorn that began this period.
THE SUN ENTERS LEO:
On Wednesday July 22nd at 12:36 P.M. EST we enter the fixed part of summer. This is the time when we traditionally see the most summer-like weather with more 90+ degree days. In each of the four seasons the fixed sign represents the strongest representation of that season. When the Sun is in Cancer we are more family oriented, and we often prefer more domestic types of activities. This is a time for playing, romance and childlike behavior in us all. Leo rules the 5th house, and as such will bring out the inner child. Take your lover on a vacation. The kids can hang out with grandma.
VENUS TRINES JUPITER:
On Monday July 27th at 12:07 A.M. EST this wonderfully positive transit will complete. This isnÕt a very powerful or life changing event, just a nice day when most people will more sociable and receptive. Art, creativity or entertainment will bring much pleasure, as will a party or other gathering.
VENUS SQUARES URANUS:
On Tuesday July 28th at 4:39 P.M. EST this interesting aspect comes along. Many of us will be flirtatious and looking for some new and exciting event. This is not a day to follow your usual routine. You may wish to be with different people, or to explore the world in an unrestricted way. Try to use a little discretion, as there is a tendency to act in a rash or impulsive way, especially in romantic situations.
MERCURY OPPOSES JUPITER:
On Thursday July 30th at 6:38 A.M. EST this brash and optimistic energy will present itself. People will be chatty and quite open. I wouldnÕt believe everything I was told today, as Jupiter tends to expand and exaggerate everything it comes in contact with, and Mercury rules the mind, speech and other communications. Try to pay attention to details. You will see the bigger picture, but could miss some of the little things. And as they say, the devil is in the details. This is an excellent day for travel. We will have the desire to expand our consciousness, and anything that helps accomplish that will be to our advantage. Travel, even short trips, can help.
MERCURY OPPOSES NEPTUNE:
On Friday July 31st at 3:47 A.M. EST this very confusing transit comes along. Take extra care to clarify things. Make sure you are understood and that you understand what others are saying. Mistakes are quite common. Be extra careful while traveling, as it is easy to become distracted and get lost or even have an accident. A little caution will go a long way towards avoiding any problems. This can bring up thoughts of spirituality and compassion.
VENUS ENTERS CANCER:
Also on Friday July 31st at 9:28 P.M. EST the planet of love enters the most emotional of signs. You can expect people to be more compassionate in general this month. Women in particular will be responsive, and many will have thoughts about children. This will stimulate the maternal instincts in us all, male or female. If you are in a fairly new relationship, it may start of change and feel more like a marriage than an affair.
VENUS OPPOSES PLUTO:
On Saturday August 1st at 7:34 P.M. EST people will be a bit compulsive and demanding. As I said above, some relationships will be changing this week. You may find that your paramour wants a deeper commitment and wonÕt settle for what was perfectly acceptable last month. If there is a problem in a relationship, or these changes begin to make themselves known, try not to blow things out of proportion today. I would discuss things again in a few days.
MERCURY ENTERS VIRGO:
On Sunday August 2nd at 7:07 P.M. EST the planet of thought and communication enters this most critical of signs. Be careful not to over analyze things or to find fault in something that is perfectly okay the way it is. There is a tendency to be picky, so try to put things in their proper perspective. Attention to detail is one of the positive results of this placement. Use it to scrutinize your work and your plans. You may find some important mistakes. Mercury rules the bonds, and we may see some interesting activity in those pits as the world scrutinizes just what the U.S. bonds are really worth.
This monthÕs lunar peak occurs on Wednesday August 5th at 8:55 P.M. EST at 13 degrees Aquarius 43 minutes and it is a Lunar Eclipse. In general, Aquarius Full Moons demand a bit more respect and attention than many others. There is an explosive quality to this sign, which can be a wonderfully freeing expression, or a disaster waiting to happen. Which way it manifests has much to do with how much freedom you give yourself normally. If you can relax and bend with the wind, this aspect, and the 2 ½ weeks until the next New Moon, can be a liberating and exciting time. If you are too strict and unbending you could experience the more negative side of this energy, which may include upsetting events with others, trouble with authority, difficulty with mechanical devices, or even an accident. The purpose is to show you what freedom means to each of us, and anything necessary to teach that lesson could be in play. Use extra care, especially while traveling and try not to stir up trouble in your relationships.
MARS SQUARES SATURN:
On Monday August 10th at 8:16 P.M. EST this most frustrating of aspects completes. This transit will create a low energy day. If this hits a sensitive point in your chart you will experience a feeling of confinement and irritation. The ego energy of Mars is seriously suppressed by the restrictive nature of Saturn. In general you can expect many people to be easily angered, so donÕt go looking for trouble.
MARS TRINES JUPITER:
On Thursday August 13th at 12:30 P.M. EST this opposite energy comes along. Where Saturn is restrictive, Jupiter is expansive. This is a high energy transit and egos will be in the forefront. ItÕs a positive and optimistic transit, but you must be careful not to overdo things or promise more than you can deliver. The lack of restraint is one of the pitfalls of this. With a little control you can accomplish a great deal and present an enthusiastic persona.
THE SUN OPPOSES JUPITER:
On Friday August 14th at 1:53 P.M. EST another optimistic transit completes. This is a good day to deal with others, and any social activity should be rewarding. Most people are outgoing and looking for adventure. Expansion is the work today, and anything you do that increases your consciousness if a positive manifestation of this. ItÕs a good day to travel. As with all Jupiter aspects a little restraint is in order. It is easy to want to do everything, but time and energy will not allow this. So pick and choose your projects with forethought.
THE SUN SEXTILES MARS:
On Monday August 17th at 6:58 A.M. EST a burst of useful energy will be felt. This hits early in the morning, so some of us could awaken early and more alert than usual. There are a lot of aspects today, some easy going some not. But the plethora of transits implies that this is a good day to get things done.
MERCURY CONJUNCTS SATURN:
Also on Monday August 17th at 11:14 A.M. EST this rather heavy and potentially negative aspect comes along. This is a time of serious thought and discussion. Most of us will not have the time for frivolous exchanges. If something needs to be said, than say it and let the chips fall where they may. The markets will that this transit and the Sun opposite Neptune in stride. It should be a very down day in for the equities.
THE SUN OPPOSES NEPTUNE:
Also on Monday August 17th at 4:56 P.M. EST this confusing and at times debilitating aspect completes. Double check all plans and documents. You can expect some mistakes. With care you may be able to catch them. Egos are fragile, so try not to provoke a fight. If this hits a sensitive point in your chart you will not have the force to stand up for yourself. This is usually a very bad aspect for the stocks.
MARS TRINES NEPTUNE:
Also on Monday August 17th at 9:29 P.M. EST the evening will feel different than the day. Although this is a trine, any combination between Mars and Neptune is suspect and likely to cause some difficulties. If used properly this aspect can create a generous and unselfish atmosphere where egos are not a problem. But in reality most of us are way too attached to our egos and find it quite difficult to take a back seat. If you struggle against the receptivity this demands you will not use it to your advantage. Still, we can hope for the best. Alcohol and drugs will be in great demand and will go down easy. How well they do coming back up on the Mars Uranus square tomorrow is another thing.
MARS SQUARES URANUS:
On Tuesday August 18th at 10:24 P.M. EST this explosive energy shows up. Do be careful! This is an accident or a fight waiting to happen. If it sets off your chart it could happen to you. Ego conflicts are serious under this square. The need for personal freedom is behind much of the stress this causes. If possible allow yourself and others the room to move about freely. It may help dissipate any tension that arises. We are near the Dark of the Moon, and if the stock markets are as shaky I I believe, this could be follow up to the Sun Neptune weakness and act as a trigger.
VENUS SEXTILES SATURN:
On Wednesday August 19th at 6:11 A.M. EST this more settled energy completes. It will help stabilize anything that was upset yesterday. But I donÕt believe this is a strong enough transit to offset the underlying confusion of the Sun Neptune opposition. The Leo New Moon tomorrow may lay some stability down, but Mercury opposes Uranus on Friday, so it will be short lived.
Enjoy the summer. It is fleeting and oh so sweet, like young love.
DARK OF THE MOON:
The next New Moon falls on Thursday August 20th at 6:02 A.M. EST at 27 degrees Leo 32 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the cycles of the moon more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, donÕt try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just wonÕt work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you donÕt, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this ÒdeadÓ energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.
Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.
Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.
The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.
All times are Eastern Daylight:
